Gas Infrastructure Plan

To help support the state’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap, Colorado policymakers have implemented requirements that provide additional transparency and oversight into how energy providers plan for and operate their natural gas systems. In response, Xcel Energy submits a Gas Infrastructure Plan to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission every two years, with the scope of the plan covering a six-year period.

Our Gas Infrastructure Plan includes:

  • Background information about our processes for system planning, modeling, stakeholder engagement, budgeting and cost projections.
  • Forecasts used to design the system to meet peak natural gas demand, customer counts, sales and capacity, natural gas mixtures and changes in projected greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Existing infrastructure assessment statistics on customer-owned natural gas lines, hydrogen compatibility and advanced leak detection monitoring.
  • Planned projects details for approximately 60 projects, including why specific projects are needed, locations and maps, analysis of alternatives, anticipated construction timelines, environmental requirements and total proposed investment.

Our customers depend on natural gas for heating and other uses, and we will continue offering this service while making our system increasingly efficient – including improving our leak detection capabilities and quickly fixing leaks found on our system. Our electrification-first approach to gas system planning includes partnering with builders, developers and our customers in evaluating electrification options while still providing natural gas service as we advance toward our net-zero energy vision.

Energy Saving Tip

Make sure to regularly change the air filters on your HVAC system (at least once per month). Old, clogged filters are far less efficient than new ones.

Break Ground, Not the Law

Always call 811 before digging in your yard to avoid hitting buried gas or electric lines. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law.
