Time of Day Plan

Shift energy usage to off-peak periods for reduced rates

If you choose to charge your electric vehicle (EV) or run appliances during off-peak hours (late evening and early morning daily), we will provide you a special off-peak rate that’s less than half the standard rate.

Get Started

  1. Call us at 1-800-895-4999 and we’ll help you choose the Time of Day rate plan that’s best for you.

  2. We’ll come to your home, remove your existing meter and replace it with a special Time of Day meter that records the time and amount of electricity used.

  3. No electrician is required (we will install the Time of Day meter).

  4. You can try a three-month trial to see if this option is right for you. If you’re not satisfied, we will recalculate your bill at the standard rate. We will charge $20 to remove the off-peak meter if you cancel.

Eligibility

To qualify, you:

  • Must be a residential electricity customer of Xcel Energy in a participating state
  • Should have some type of load/appliance that can easily be shifted to off-peak hours
  • Should use at least 650 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in electricity monthly

To maximize your benefit, you should have at least one of the following:

  • Electric thermal storage heating
  • Radiant floor heat
  • Electric water heaters

Off-Peak Times

Start time for Off-Peak (12-hour period): 9:00 p.m.

Seven major holidays are also billed at the off-peak rate. They are New Years Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Weekends are always off-peak, 24 hours a day.

Rates: See rate information (PDF)

Note: Rates are subject to riders/adjustments (such as fuel costs), city fees, taxes and other charges where applicable. Rates may change upon approval by your state’s energy agency.

If you use electricity during peak times while on the Time of Day plan, you pay a rate higher than standard residential rates.

You must remain on the chosen plan for a minimum of one year. After one year you may change your peak period selection.

You cannot participate in Saver's Switch while on this program.

Energy Saving Tip

Set your hot water heater to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This isn't just energy smart—it's also safer, since it reduces the likelihood of accidental burns.

Break Ground, Not the Law

Always call 811 before digging in your yard to avoid hitting buried gas or electric lines. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law.
