Limited Off-Peak Service Program

Receive up to a 50% reduced energy rate for specific electric equipment operating at off-peak times.

Pay a lower rate for the energy used by certain appliances during times when demand is lower.

Get Started

  1. Call us at 1-800-895-4999 to request a meter and start saving. You must enroll for at least one year from your sign-up date.

  2. We'll install the second meter at no cost to you.

  3. Hire a licensed electrician at your own expense to connect appliances to the off-peak meter, install a duplex socket meter and include an automatic control switch. The estimated cost for this installation is about $1,500 - $2,000.

  4. After the automatic control and other equipment have been installed, you or your contractor should call 1-800-422-0782. Select option 1 and request the Meter Department to install a Limited Off-Peak meter.

How It Works

Two installed electric meters will track your energy use. The first meters regular household appliances at the standard kWh rate. The second off-peak meter tracks specific appliances at the discounted rate. Please call to learn about supported appliances.

Although there is an additional monthly meter charge for the extra meter, your discounted rate is nearly half that of the standard residential rate. If you choose to run your equipment during on-peak hours, you will pay an added penalty, and after three violations we may choose to remove you from the program.

There is an additional monthly meter charge for the extra meter.

To qualify for the special rates, you must be an Xcel Energy residential electric customer in participating states.

Note: Rates are subject to riders/adjustments (such as fuel costs), city fees, taxes and other charges where applicable. Rates may change upon approval by your state’s energy agency.

Your reduced energy rate for specific electric equipment applies between 10:00 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. daily in Minnesota. See rate information (PDF) for more details.

Energy Saving Tip

Rather than crank up your heat in the winter, keep your thermostat at a moderate level and bundle up. (Who doesn't love fuzzy slippers?)

Break Ground, Not the Law

Always call 811 before digging in your yard to avoid hitting buried gas or electric lines. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law.
