Reconnecting Your Service After a Flood or Fire

Follow these precautions after a flood or fire

If your electricity or natural gas service is disconnected during a flood or fire, for your safety, an inspection is required before we can restore your service.

Once your inspection is complete, contact Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999 to turn on your service and light your pilot lights. There will not be a charge for the reconnection of your service.

Please refer to the information below for other safety precautions.

Natural Gas Safety

Have a qualified heating professional check your furnace and any natural gas appliances that were submerged. Never attempt to turn the natural gas back on yourself. After the necessary inspections are performed, Xcel Energy will turn your natural gas back on to ensure your service is safe and reliable.

Appliance control manufacturers recommend that a trained service professional replace all controls that have been submerged in water. Manufacturers warn that these appliance controls will corrode over time, causing gas valve failure and dangerous natural gas leaks. Appliance controls are often at the bottom of the appliance, and the appliance itself does not have to be submerged for appliance controls to be submerged.

To report a natural gas emergency or gas odor, leave immediately and contact Xcel Energy 24 hour Gas Emergency at 1-800-895-2999 from a neighbor’s telephone or in an emergency, call 911.

Electric Safety

Do not touch or attempt to unplug or disconnect an electrical appliance if you have to stand in water or even on a damp floor to do it. Don’t risk your life.

If your electric meter or other parts of the electric system in your house – such as baseboard heaters or outlets – were effected in a flood or fire, contact a qualified electrician and the appropriate electrical inspector, even if your power did not go out. Have the electrician check the wiring and related equipment to ensure it’s safe. If your power was out because of a flood or fire, you will be required to have a certified inspector check your electrical wiring and equipment before Xcel Energy can restore power to your house.

To report an electrical emergency or a power outage, call Xcel Energy 24-hour Electric Emergency/Lights Out at 1-800-895-1999.

Energy Saving Tip

What's the point in filling your home with cool or warm air, only to have it disappear? Invest in high quality insulation to help keep temperature-controlled air where it belongs.

Break Ground, Not the Law

Always call 811 before digging in your yard to avoid hitting buried gas or electric lines. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law.
