Natural Gas Project St. Cloud

Project Overview

We are replacing existing natural gas lines in downtown St. Cloud. This project is being constructed as part of our commitment to system revitalization, continuing to ensure public safety and reliability.
Natural gas line work for this project will occur within the following areas:

  • 1st Street S. between 4th Avenue S. and 10th Avenue S.
  • 4th Avenue S. between 1st Street S. and West St Germain Street.
  • 7th Avenue N. near Courthouse Square.
  • 8th Avenue N. between 1st Street S. and 2nd Street S.
  • 10 Avenue S. and 1st Avenue S. to 10th Avenue N. and south of 1st Street N.
  • West St. Germain Street, between 4th Avenue S. and 5th Avenue S.
  • Four alleyway segments in downtown St. Cloud.
  • Sidewalks along West St Germain Street.

As part of this project, we will also relocate meters from building interiors to building exteriors. By relocating meters to building exteriors, we can read the meters more efficiently and have improved access for our routine safety inspections. We will coordinate directly with customers whose meters will be moved to their building exteriors, and the work will be performed by qualified contractors.

Project Update - July 2019

Construction activities continue in the following areas:

  • 10th Avenue South, between 1st Street North and 1st Street South. Through traffic will continue to be allowed in this area, but please allow for extra time to navigate through the construction work area. Street parking restriction will occur as we work in this area. Sites within the construction work area will remain accessible.
  • West St. Germain Street at 10th Avenue South. As we construct in this area, through traffic should follow alternative routes. Street parking restrictions will occur. Sites within the construction work area will remain accessible.
  • 7th Avenue North, between 1st and 2nd Streets North and West St. Germain Street. As we construct in this area, through traffic should follow alternative routes. Street parking restrictions will occur as we work in this area. Sites within the construction work area will remain accessible.

  • Alleys north of West St. Germain Street, between 7th Avenue North and 9th Avenue North. As we complete work in these alleyways, traffic will be restricted. We anticipate reopening the alley each evening to enable trash pickup and business deliveries.

Project Schedule

Construction began in mid-June 2019. We anticipate that construction activities, including restoring previous work areas and bringing the project into service, will be completed by early October 2019.

Construction Overview

We will install the natural gas lines by open trenching. To avoid traffic impacts to West St. Germain Street as much as possible, the new natural gas lines will be installed in the locations outlined above. This project will also require natural gas line work within sidewalks along West St. Germain Street.
During construction, we will take measures to reduce inconveniences to local businesses, residents and commuters and will follow the permitting requirements set by the City of St. Cloud for constructing this project.
Potential disruptions from construction may include:

  • Partial or complete road and alley closures and traffic control measures.
  • Potential traffic delays.
  • Temporary changes to business and resident access.
  • Elevated levels of noise during natural gas line installation and testing.
  • Temporary natural gas service outage. If a temporary disruption is necessary, you will be notified at least one week in advance. Gas service disruption may last up to eight hours, but we will make every effort to schedule shutoffs during the least disruptive hours to customers.

Once construction has been completed in an area, we will restore the area to the condition required by the jurisdictional permits.

During construction, we will periodically post updates to this website.

Safety

Public safety is at the foundation of all we do. The safety of the public around our natural gas system influences every decision we make. We take a proactive approach to public safety by implementing safety measures before, during and after construction.

This project has been designed to continue to meet federal and state standards and safety requirements for installing, maintaining and operating natural gas infrastructure.
