Black Dog Natural Gas Pipeline Project

Project Overview

We are currently constructing the Black Dog Natural Gas Pipeline. The project includes approximately 2.2 miles of new, 16-inch diameter natural gas pipeline between the Northern Natural Gas Company's Cedar Station in Eagan, Minn. and the Xcel Energy Black Dog Generating Plant in Burnsville, Minn.

Project Benefits

This project will address the need for new natural gas supply to the Black Dog Generating Plant. As a separate project, the Black Dog Generating Plant is currently undergoing a conversion from using coal-fired electric generators to gas-fired electric generators.

Project Schedule

Permitting for the project began in the fall of 2016 and construction began in April of this year.

Construction is approximately 75 percent complete. The project experienced some weather and site conditional challenges that have pushed the completion date beyond July. The project is scheduled to be substantially complete by the end of October. The contractor is expected to start demobilizing from the park in September, with final inspections and site restoration expected to be completed by the end of September. We understand the impacts to the community and are working as quickly and as safely as possible to complete the project.

Energy Saving Tip

Create your own shade by planting a tree in a strategic location in your yard to block sunlight from pouring into your windows. It doesn't get much more green than a tree!

Gas Meter Safety

Keep your natural gas meter dry and clear of snow and ice at all times to avoid the potential for dangerous indoor natural gas buildup.
