2016 Colorado Phase II Electric Rate Case

Making energy pricing easier, more fair and flexible enough to power new technology

For more than a century, we have provided energy solutions that help meet the growing electricity needs of our customers. We’re committed to developing and advancing new ideas to give customers the choices they want, at an affordable price.

In an August 15, 2016 filing with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Xcel Energy and 22 of 26 intervenors agreed, in total or in part, on a global settlement on three recent Xcel Energy filings. Those included the company’s Phase II Electric Rate Case, Solar*Connect, and the 2017 Renewable Energy Plan. On November 9, 2016, the CPUC approved this settlement. The decision will allow us to give our customers more control over their energy choices, will bring more renewable and carbon-free energy to Colorado through the use of new technologies, and provide affordable and reliable energy to further power the state’s economy.

We are not requesting an increase in our revenue requirements in this proposal, but we are proposing new pricing options to help keep energy costs affordable for families, businesses and communities.

Powering Technology

New technologies are transforming the way customers can manage their energy use—and can also help us improve our serve to you. That’s why we’re proposing changes in this filing to make it easier to embrace and get the most out of these new technologies, like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, back-up energy systems and home energy management systems, just to name a few.

More Customer Choice & Control

We are listening to our customers and suggesting changes to address their wants and needs. Changes in our rate designs can help us roll out new programs to give you more control over how and when you use electricity—and in some cases, even how much you pay for it. We also want to give you more information as a tool to make better and more educated decisions about your energy use and manage your budget.

Fair Pricing

We’re here to serve all customers, whether your concern is keeping your energy costs within a fixed budget or you want your energy from 100 percent renewable sources. All of our customers benefit from our secure and reliable grid. Our proposed new rate options make it so that you pay for what you use, while make pricing more transparent and easier to understand.

Filing Documents

Rates are set through a transparent process of proceedings with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, the body that regulates Xcel Energy and other utilities in the state. It includes public input and participation, and all investor-owned utilities use this same process. You can review our filing documents here and also follow the proceedings at the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies website.

Energy Saving Tip

Create your own shade by planting a tree in a strategic location in your yard to block sunlight from pouring into your windows. It doesn't get much more green than a tree!

Break Ground, Not the Law

Always call 811 before digging in your yard to avoid hitting buried gas or electric lines. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law.
