Upper Midwest 2016-2030 Resource Plan

Our 2016-2030 Upper Midwest Resource Plan was originally filed with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in January 2015. In October 2015, we proposed a bold new strategy that would accelerate our transition from coal-based generation while continuing to ensure a reliable energy system – and responsibly protect jobs and investment in our communities.

Our strategy for our Upper Midwest energy system proposed to:

  • Provide 63 percent of our energy from carbon-free sources
  • Reduce carbon emissions by 60 percent from 2005 levels
  • Continue our transition from coal to clean energy, including renewables and natural gas
  • Operate our nuclear fleet through their current licenses
  • Accelerate renewable energy development; by 2030, 35 percent of the electricity we provide would be from wind and solar resources

We received approval from the commission in October 2016 on our long-range plan to begin transitioning our energy fleet, including the retirement of two generating units at Sherco, significant expansion of renewable energy at a competitive price, and beginning the process to build replacement natural gas generation. The commission’s decision provides a path to 63 percent carbon-free energy in the next 15 years, with more than one-third generated from renewables. It also allows Minnesota and the surrounding region to affordably meet state and national energy standards, while creating new jobs and investments for the communities we serve. We anticipate a written order by the end of 2016.

Energy Saving Tip

Make sure to regularly change the air filters on your HVAC system (at least once per month). Old, clogged filters are far less efficient than new ones.
