Minnesota Time of Use Pricing Pilot

We've proposed a new pilot program in two areas of the Twin Cities which may help customers save on their bills by shifting the times they use electricity. If approved, the pilot will begin in 2019 with the installation of advanced meters at 17,500 homes in the Midtown Minneapolis area and in Eden Prairie and surrounding communities.

The new meters, which measure electricity use in 15 minute increments, will allow customers to participate in upcoming Time of Use Pricing. In the pilot, customers' bills will be based on how much electricity they use, as well as when they use it. So the more customers can shift usage to lower priced time periods, the more its possible to save. This pilot will help us see how customers respond to Time of Use Pricing and how much energy use is likely to change under new pricing plans.

The initial filing with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission was made in November 2017 and we anticipate a final decision in late 2018. We'll provide periodic updates here as the filing progresses.

Energy Saving Tip

Set your hot water heater to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This isn't just energy smart—it's also safer, since it reduces the likelihood of accidental burns.

Gas Meter Safety

Keep your natural gas meter dry and clear of snow and ice at all times to avoid the potential for dangerous indoor natural gas buildup.
