A new pilot program in two areas of the Twin Cities may help customers save on their bills by shifting the times they use electricity. The pilot will begin in 2019 with the installation of advanced meters at 17,500 homes in the Midtown Minneapolis area and in Eden Prairie and surrounding communities.
The new meters, which measure electricity use in 15 minute increments, will allow customers to participate in upcoming Time of Use pricing. In the pilot, customers' bills will be based on how much electricity they use, as well as when they use it. So the more customers can shift usage to lower priced time periods, the more it's possible to save. This pilot will help us see how customers respond to Time of Use pricing and how much energy use is likely to change under new pricing plans.
The initial filing with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission was made in November 2017 and approved in August 2018.
