Xcel Energy Foundation and employees celebrate another year of giving

Xcel Energy Foundation supports local nonprofit organizations in 2016.

Minneapolis–-Dec. 21, 2016-– In this season of giving, Xcel Energy’s commitment to communities shines through as  employees volunteered more than 20,000 hours and donated more than $3 million to support local nonprofits this year. Xcel Energy Minnesota  employees and families also volunteered an additional 2,000 hours packing food for families, filling backpacks with school supplies for low income students , and painting, cleaning or doing yard work as part of the company’s annual Day of Service.

In addition to matching these employee contributions dollar-for-dollar, nearly $4 million in nonprofit grants were awarded by the company’s foundation nationwide, with about half that amount supporting the work of 250 Upper Midwest organizations.

“Our nonprofit partners work every year to meet the needs of the community while making every dollar count,” said Chris Clark, president, Xcel Energy-Minnesota. “They balance countless demands and determine the best way to use contributions in their communities. We thank them for all they do.”

The Xcel Energy Foundation promotes the company’s primary focus areas of:

  • Education, particularly organizations that improve science, technology, engineering and math education;
  • Economic sustainability, including workforce development and economic self-sufficiency;
  • Environment, particularly organizations that protect and enhance the natural environment.
  • Access to arts and culture.

One grant recipient that exemplifies the kind of work the foundation supports is Cookie Cart, which provides Twin Cities teenagers with the work, life and leadership skills needed to be successful in school and in their careers with hands-on training in its urban nonprofit bakery.

In addition to financial support, Xcel Energy volunteers mentor  and conduct mock job interviews with  Cookie Cart teens.

“Xcel Energy employees really stepped up to work one-on-one with teens at Cookie Cart,” said Matt Halley, executive director, Cookie Cart. “They focused on connecting with teens as they develop communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills that are critical for success personally and professionally.”
