Working at Xcel Energy

Learn about working as part of the Xcel Energy team

Whether you’re just starting your career or looking for a place to grow, we have a wide range of opportunities to develop your skills and build your career at a company with a 100-year track record of success. And your timing is excellent: with more than half our workforce eligible to retire over the next decade, we will have openings at all levels, from internships to leadership.

We’re constantly looking for hard workers who are ethical, smart, curious, and eager to learn. We strongly value team players who thrive working with others and also on their own. We value work-life balance and also strongly support volunteering in our communities. And, above all else, our employees must be serious about safety and commit to never cutting corners.

Learn about some of our key values below.

Be Engaged

We’re actively engaged in our communities, and because of that, you’ll receive 40 hours of paid volunteer time off each year. We even match up to 100 hours of your off-hours volunteer time at $10 per hour, so the qualifying nonprofits you support get twice the benefit. Between the Xcel Energy Foundation, our annual United Way Campaign, and our many other efforts, we’re committed to the communities we serve, and strongly encourage our employees to give back.

Be Inclusive

Diversity is not just a reflection of race or ethnicity. Your education, background, age, gender, sexual orientation, native language, geographic allegiance, and personality all equip you to make a distinctive contribution to our team.

We are proud to have been named one of the Human Rights Campaign's Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality every year since 2017. This is based on achieving 100 points on the Corporate Equality Index. - a benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices for LGBT employees. In 2020, Xcel Energy also joined other major employers across the United States in signing up to support an effort to add federal legal protection for LGBTQ Amercians by joining the Business Coalition for the Equality Act.

Our employees have also formed a number of Business Resource Groups (BRGs), which provide a safe place to exchange ideas, perform community outreach, and achieve personal and professional growth. Our Council for Diversity and Inclusion, composed of leaders from each of the BRGs, promotes collaboration between the groups. Our BRGs contribute to the company’s internal news site and hold events to share information about social issues, the company’s role in promoting diversity and inclusion, and the ways other can get involved.

Be Proud

If you believe strongly in protecting the environment and expanding renewable energy, you’ll be comfortable here. We go out of our way to help our customers conserve energy and save money. We’ve also been recognized nationally for our prompt, safe, and efficient emergency response. We’ve been keeping the lights on and homes warm for more than 100 years, and we’re proud of the way we do it. Learn more about our social, environmental, and employee commitments in our Corporate Responsibility Report.

Be Rewarded

At Xcel Energy, you’ll receive a market-competitive total rewards package that includes a lot more than just a paycheck: health care coverage and wellness plans, dental and eye care coverage, a 401(k) plan with a company match contribution, and (for most employees) a fully-paid pension, paid time off, and life and disability insurance. In addition, many of our employees are recognized for their accomplishments with incentive pay. Bargaining-unit employees are compensated according to union contracts that vary by region.

Be Safe

There isn’t much margin for error when you’re in the business of delivering electricity and natural gas to millions of homes and businesses. At Xcel Energy, safety is a core value: for you, your coworkers, and our customers. Our employees know that if they see something that doesn’t look quite right, they have not just the ability, but the responsibility to call a halt at any time, no questions asked, until it’s safe to proceed. We insist that all of our employees follow proper safety procedures at all times. Learn about our commitment to public safety and view our Alcohol and Drug-free Workplace Policy (PDF).

Be the Best

If you decide to pursue a career with us, you should know that we try our best to make sure you’ll be a good fit. The energy business continues to change to adapt to customers’ desires for renewable energy and best-of-industry experiences, and you can be a part of shaping our future. For many positions, we ask qualified applicants to take pre-hire behavioral assessments. For select technical positions, we also ask applicants to take an employment test developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI). Once you have applied for a job that requires either of these assessments, your application will be reviewed by a recruiter. If selected, you’ll receive an email invitation with instructions on how to proceed.

Break Ground, Not the Law

Always call 811 before digging in your yard to avoid hitting buried gas or electric lines. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law.
