Energy Innovation Corridor

Partnership developed a clean energy and transportation showcase

Located within one of the most unique urban communities in the country, the Energy Innovation Corridor is an area along the METRO Green Line light rail which showcases energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, and smart technology.

We led this unprecedented five-year collaboration of more than 20 public and private partners that resulted in preventing more than three billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That's enough to power nearly 115,000 homes and equivalent to taking 236,500 cars off the road. Businesses, residents and travelers in the area benefit from one of the most sophisticated energy and transportation infrastructure systems ever developed, by offering options integrated in a way never before seen in areas such as:

  • Energy efficiency projects such as lighting retrofits and LEED® certified buildings
  • Renewable energy from biomass, solar, Windsource® and hydro power
  • Plug-in electric vehicles, and fleet and car-sharing programs, and
  • Two-way communication, intelligent centralized software and other smart technologies

Awards & Achievements

The goal of the Energy Innovation Corridor was to achieve economic vitality through carbon avoidance and we exceeded our goal by preventing more than three billion pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the environment. Within the Energy Innovation Corridor showcase area, partners measure electric and natural gas energy savings, renewable energy generated and consumed, electric vehicle impacts, car-sharing/bike-sharing programs as well as smart technologies implemented. The economic impact of the initiative is estimated at more than $65 million. The initiative was recognized for these efforts with the following awards:

2012 Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance - Inspiring Efficiency Award - recognizes organizations that have developed and implemented a program that increases knowledge and action on energy efficiency.

2013 Environmental Initiative Award - Climate Protection - honors innovative projects that have achieved extraordinary environmental results by harnessing the power of partnership in the state of Minnesota.

2014 Sustainable Saint Paul Award - Innovative Collaboration - recognizes organizations for collaborative work that result in making St. Paul a more sustainable city.
