Lighting Efficiency for Trade Partners

Lighting Efficiency can help you increase your sales of energy-saving lighting equipment. Through our Lighting Efficiency program, we offer rebates to Colorado electric business customers who purchase and install qualifying energy-efficient lighting options.

For most businesses, lighting is a main driver of energy bills, accounting for up to 44 percent of monthly energy costs. Every step to lower lighting use, from installing energy-efficient lighting to limiting lights to where and when they’re needed, can significantly lower your customers’ energy bills and earn substantial rebates.

Lighting Efficiency program overview.

Four Ways to Lower Your Customer’s Lighting Costs and Earn Rebates:

  1. Lighting retrofit rebates - Available for existing facilities of any size, our one-to-one retrofit rebates help offset the cost of installing new lighting that's more efficient than your current lighting.
  2. New construction lighting rebates - Available for new facilities or those going through major renovations, we reward you for choosing lighting options that are more efficient than standard-efficiency options.
  3. Custom Efficiency lighting rebates - Custom Efficiency lighting rebates are available for energy-saving lighting projects not currently included in our prescriptive Lighting Efficiency rebate program. Requires preapproval before equipment purchase and installation.
  4. Lighting redesign study funding and rebates - A lighting redesign study can help determine the proper lighting levels for your space. We help fund studies and offer cash rebates of up to $400 per kW saved when you make recommended changes. Requires preapproval.

Program Update:

Lighting Redesign Program:

We offer funding to customers who complete a lighting redesign study of their current system and rebates to those who implement the recommended changes.

Description of Eligibility
A Lighting Certified (LC), Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional (CLEP), or International Association of Lighting Designers member (IALD), must perform the study. The study provides a complete building-wide lighting system analysis for customers with overlit and/or mislit spaces and makes recommendations on the best approach to improving the design by reducing the existing light output while maintaining the proper lighting levels.

Rebate
Xcel Energy will pay up to 50% of the cost of the study, not to exceed $15,000. Xcel Energy provides incentives up to $400/kW saved for implementation of recommended actions. Preapproval required for studies.

If you have a LC, CLEP, or IALD qualification and would like to be apart of or Colorado Lighting Redesign Service Providers list please email Jackie Ducharme indicating your interest. This list will be provided to our customers who are interested in commissioning a Lighting Redesign study.

Calculating Approximate Energy Savings for Your Lighting Project:

  1. Use the input wattage guide to see what your existing fixture consumes (X watts).
  2. Determine the same for your new or retrofitted fixture (Y watts).
  3. Then subtract the difference to get the savings per fixture (X-Y=Z watts saved per fixture).
  4. Multiply this by the quantity of fixtures to get total watts saved.
  5. Divide this total savings by 1000 to get kilowatts (kW) saved.
  6. Determine your annual hours of operation (let's say 4,000 for this example).
  7. Determine your blended energy costs from energy bills by dividing total electric bill cost by total kWh (cost/kWh). This should equal about $0.075/kWh.
  8. Then multiply: total savings (Z kW) X annual hours (4,000 hrs) X cost ($0.075/kWh)
  9. This will give you approximate annual savings for your project.
  10. You can then use this number in the simple payback calculator below.

Newly Approved Prescriptive Measures:

High-bay Fluorescent Fixtures with Electronic Ballast:

  • One-to-one replacement of HID fixtures
  • Previous minimum performance criteria no longer needed
  • List ballast factor on page 4 of application
  • Invoice must match equipment installed
  • Other fixture configurations will be considered under the Custom Efficiency Program
  • Invoices for the revised high-bay measures must be dated on or after March 10, 2008
  • Invoices for pre-existing high-bay options can be dated prior to March 10, but within the one year requirement

Note: Reference page 3 of the application for new high-bay qualifications and measurements.

What is a Super T8? Xcel Energy defines a Super T8 system as a combination of high lumen 32-watt T8 lamps and an energy-efficient electronic ballast. The specifications for these lamps and ballasts can be found on page 5 of the retrofit application and page 4 of the new construction application. To see a list of qualifying equipment, go to http://www.cee1.org/.

Rebate Application and Guidelines:

  • For retrofits, complete pages 1, 3 and 4 of the Retrofit Application
  • For retrofit T12 to T8 conversions only, use our Express Application
  • For new construction, complete pages 1 and 3 of the New Construction Application
  • For parking garage retrofit, complete pages 1 and 2 of the Parking Garage Retrofit Application
  • For lighting redesign, complete the Study Preapproval Application pages 1 and 2 first. Once your study has been preapproved and project completed, fill out lighting redesign Study Rebate Application pages 1 and 2.
  • Check the rules section to ensure the technology qualifies.
  • Have the customer sign the application.
  • Use the alternative rebate recipient section if the rebate will go to someone other than the customer.
  • Include invoices with product model numbers and quantities. We also want material and labor costs broken out, if possible.
  • Send the completed application to Xcel Energy. See application for details or call our Business Solutions Center at 1-800-481-4700.
