Windsource®
Growing the renewable energy business in Minnesota.
With Windsource your business can help increase our supply of renewable energy when you buy blocks of wind-generated electricity, equal to the electricity used in your business.
With Windsource, you choose how much wind energy you would like to support. You can choose a fixed number of Windsource blocks (100 kWh each) or choose the 100% Windsource option. Windsource is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once our wind energy supply is fully subscribed, you may be added to a waiting list.
The cost of all the Windsource energy you purchase will be based on your actual metered electricity usage billed at the base electric rate plus the Windsource Program charge, less a fuel cost credit.
As of February 1, 2007 there was a change in the way Windsource is billed in Minnesota.

The “nominal” charge for Minnesota Windsource is now $3.53 per 100 kWh block.

Fuel Clause Rider does not apply to Windsource energy so the “net” premium for Windsource is less than the $3.53 nominal charge. This “net” Windsource cost is shown on subscribers’ bills and will vary from month-to-month as the fuel costs vary.

MN Windsource customers will get a credit for the avoided fuel costs of conventional sources of energy. The credit is the Fuel Cost Charge which includes a Base Fuel Cost and a Fuel Cost Adjustment.

Fuel Cost Adjustment: (varies monthly).
- Prior to this February 1, 2007 rate change Residential and C&I used the same Base Fuel Cost and Fuel Cost Adjustment.
- After February 1, 2007, Residential and C&I will have different Base Fuel Cost and Fuel Cost Adjustment.
- The following table is an estimate of the Windsource Program charge based on Base Fuel Costs and Fuel Cost Adjustment for January 2007. Actual charges will vary monthly.

Energy Supply
The energy that supplies Windsource is 100 percent wind energy generated or purchased from Minnesota wind farms. A total of 19 wind turbines located in Pipestone and Dodge County in Minnesota currently supply the wind energy. The electricity is added to the Xcel Energy system for use across our service area in Minnesota.
