Limited Off-Peak

Eligibility

The Limited Off-Peak Service program is available to residential electricity customers located in Xcel Energy's service territories in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Description

The program makes a reduced energy rate available to residential customers for specific electric equipment operating between: 10:00 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. (in MN, ND, SD) and 9:00 p.m. and 7 a.m. (in WI, MI), seven days a week. Two installed electric meters allow for the standard kWh rate to be tracked on the first meter for regular household appliance usage while the lower rate is tracked on the second meter for specific appliances. There is an additional monthly meter charge for the additional meter.

Customers with electric thermal storage heating, radiant floor heat, or electric water heaters that store electric heat during off-peak periods for use during the next day’s on-peak period will benefit the most. Customer’s monthly usage should be 650 kWh to benefit the most.

Pros: Your off-peak rate is about half that of standard residential rates.

Cons: If you use the appliances that are connected to your off-peak meter during peak times, you will pay a penalty of $0.20/kWh. If this occurs for three or more consecutive months, we reserve the right to remove you from the plan.

How the Program Works

  • Appliances/equipment connected to the Limited Off-Peak meter can only operate during the off-peak hours, seven days a week.
  • Xcel Energy recommends that the customer install an automatic control (at customer’s expense) to turn equipment connected to the Limited Off-Peak meter on and off automatically to coincide with the on/off-peak periods.
  • You must hire a licensed electrician to wire your selected appliances to the off-peak meter. When you run those appliances during the off-peak hours, you get a reduced electric rate.
  • You must remain on the plan for at least one year from the date of enrollment.

Metering Requirements:

  • A duplex meter socket is required. Next to your regular meter, we will install an off-peak meter that records the time and amount of electricity used.
  • A separate service panel must be installed for equipment that will be connected to the Limited Off-Peak meter. If you select to control your own load, you will be required to provide a load-break switch or circuit breaker that allows us to operate remote control equipment from the power source.
