Windsource®

Harnessing the power of wind for a cleaner Colorado.

Windsource® from Xcel Energy® is now open to new subscribers in Colorado. When you purchase Windsource you are helping to support clean, renewable wind energy generated from Colorado wind farms. It’s an affordable and easy way to help Colorado’s environment.

With Windsource, you choose how much wind energy you would like to support. You can choose a fixed number of Windsource blocks (100 kWh each) or choose the 100% Windsource option. Windsource is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once our wind energy supply is fully subscribed you may be added to a waiting list.

The Windsource rate is in addition to your base electrical rates and is currently set at $4.708 per 100 kWh block. Based on your Windsource usage, you will also receive credits for the Air Quality Improvement Rider (AQIR) and for the cost of coal and natural gas from your base rates, known as the Electric Commodity Adjustment (ECA). For example, a customer who signs up for 100 percent Windsource will receive a 100 percent credit toward their ECA and AQIR. The ECA adjustment is subject to change on a quarterly basis.

For 2007, the average net Windsource charge was $1.110 per 100 kWh block. For the first half of 2008, the average net Windsource charge was $1.420 per 100 kWh block.  Based on this rate history, an average residential customer using 675 kWh per month and signing up for 100 percent Windsource should expect an average increase of less than $10 to their monthly bill.

Boulder customers who sign up for Windsource also receive a credit toward the Climate Action Plan tax.

All rates are subject to change at any time pending approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Colorado. Based on current rates and your individual usage, your rates may vary from the example presented above.

For our residential electric customers, there’s a minimum one-year purchase requirement.  You’ll continue to participate in Windsource on a month-to-month basis after the one-year period unless you notify us of a change in your commitment. Please allow 30 days for your change to be effective. If you move before completing your minimum term your Windsource commitment will terminate automatically.
