Frequently Asked Questions

How does Windsource improve the environment?

Through Windsource electricity is produced without air emissions, such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, both considered to contribute to greenhouse gases. Wind-generated electricity also uses no water and therefore requires no water treatment during production.

Supporting renewable energy means helping to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and preserve our natural resources for the future.

Purchasing one (100 kWh block) of Windsource for one year has the following environmental benefits:

  • Carbon dioxide avoided: 2,449 lbs. CO2
  • Miles not driven: 2,400 miles
  • Trees Planted: 1/3 acre

Where and how is the wind-generated electricity used?

Windsource electricity does not go directly to participants’ homes. Instead, it is available on the Xcel Energy system for use across our service area. When you buy Windsource, you increase the amount of wind energy available, without producing air emissions or using water.

How does Windsource work?

You choose to participate as much as you like. One block is the equivalent of 100-kilowatt-hours of electricity, or one seventh of the energy used in an average Minnesota home. We require a one-year commitment and your Windsource support shows up right on your monthly energy bill.

Are there other benefits of Windsource?

Wind power is good for Minnesota’s economy too. Installing and maintaining wind turbines creates jobs, ongoing lease payments are made to land owners who can still use the land for other purposes uses, such as farming. And wind turbines create additional tax income for counties.
