Minnesota and Wisconsin TRI Reporting
Electricity for Xcel Energy’s northern operating area is produced using coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear fuel, wood waste, refuse-derived fuel and renewable energy such as hydropower and wind. This power meets the energy needs of approximately 1.5 million customers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Michigan.
The majority of our TRI reported releases come from coal. This fuel naturally contains trace amounts (in the parts-per-million range) of these elements: barium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, zinc, chloride (which forms hydrochloric acid) and fluoride (which forms hydrogen fluoride). Coal composition and mineralogy vary, depending upon where the coal is mined. Our facilities may report different chemicals and quantities because they burn different quantities of coal from a variety of mines. Subsequently, our TRI releases may vary from year to year.
Variations in 2006 related largely to coal composition changes and updates to factors used in calculating some emissions.
