Texas and New Mexico TRI Reporting (Southwestern Public Service Co.)

We use coal, natural gas and wind to produce electricity for nearly 400,000 customers in Texas and  New Mexico.

Most of our facilities that report under TRI are coal-fired power plants. Coal naturally contains trace amounts of these reportable elements: barium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, zinc, chloride (which forms hydrochloric acid) and fluoride (which forms hydrogen fluoride). Coal quality is highly variable, depending on where and how it was formed millions of years ago. Because we buy coal from several mines, minor variations in the emissions reported may occur due to the differences between coal mines.

Variations in 2006 related largely to more coal being burned and updates to factors used in calculating some emissions.
