Llano Estacado Wind Ranch
Location: Texico, New Mexico (near Clovis).
Plant Description: Three wind turbines.
Power Production Capabilities: Up to 1.8 megawatts (MW).
About The Facility: The wind ranch, brought on line as a one-turbine facility June 22, 1999, offered the first commercial-scale wind generation in New Mexico. The power generated here is sold through Xcel Energy's Windsource® program to customers in eastern New Mexico. Largely owned by Cielo Wind Power of Austin, Texas, the wind ranch has three identical turbines manufactured by Vestas American Wind Technology, Inc., a subsidiary of Vestas Wind Systems A/S. Each is capable of generating up to 660 kilowatts of electricity. Each turbine's blade path is 47 meters, or 154 feet, in diameter. The center of each turbine is 65 meters, or 213 feet, from the ground. The turbines begin generating electricity with wind speeds of nine mph, achieve maximum output at 25 mph, and stop spinning at 56 mph to protect from damage.
