White Deer Wind Park Power Plant
Location: Near White Deer, Texas, about 42 miles northeast of Amarillo.
Plant Description: 80 wind turbines.
Power Production Capabilities: Up to 80 megawatts (MW).
About The Facility: White Deer Wind Park is located in the Panhandle region of Texas. The White Deer project consists of 80 turbines, situated on nine sections of land along a slightly elevated area in a region of flat terrain that includes farms and small oil-producing wells. The 226-foot-high turbines convert recurring winds that cross the smoothed plains into enough electricity to annually meet the needs of more than 26,000 households.
The White Deer project was developed by Cielo Wind Power, LLC of Austin, Texas, and operates under a 15-year power purchase agreement with Southwestern Public Service Company, an Xcel Energy operating company. Construction of the project started in October 2001 and was completed in an impressive 15 weeks. Shell Renewables’ U.S. wind energy operation, Shell WindEnergy Inc., owns White Deer Wind Park.
