Employment Testing
Pre-employment testing helps Xcel Energy identify and assess the abilities and skills needed for certain jobs. Like many businesses, Xcel Energy seeks employees who can learn quickly and contribute to the company’s success.
Our pre-employment tests are job related, fair and objective. The paper-and-pencil tests help predict a candidate’s likelihood of success on the job and provide a clear measure of mechanical aptitude, math skills and other competencies. We partner with the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for the majority of our employment tests.
Test Preparation
Preparing is a big part of the testing process. You’ll find some tips, hints and sample test questions using these EEI links. The tips and practice tests may help improve your chances of qualifying.

Xcel Energy’s Testing Process
Xcel Energy allows candidates to take the EEI tests before actual openings become available in order to have pre-qualified candidates ready to fill certain entry-level positions.
Entry-level positions provide hands-on experience and training that will enable you to move into apprenticeship programs. These programs will prepare you for journeyman positions in Xcel Energy facilities throughout the United States.
If you would like to take an EEI test for an entry-level position, use the link below to start your job search. Look first for the location that interests you. Then complete the entry-level power plant exam application.
Once we receive you online application, we will send you instructions on how to register for a test in your geographic area.
Remember: if you pass the EEI test, you must still apply for each position that interests you.

Non-entry-level Position Testing
Tests for non-entry level positions are administered on a per opening basis. We will notify applicants of the testing dates by mail with instructions on how to register for a test in your geographic area.
