Xcel Energy announces its Colorado customers can purchase energy-efficient bulbs for as low as $1

Encourages customers to make simple switch to energy-efficient lighting

DENVER - Starting today, Coloradans can purchase a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb for as low as $1, and save up to $30 in energy costs over the life of just one CFL bulb under a program sponsored by Xcel Energy.

Special prices are available on four packs of 60-watt equivalent ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs at participating King Soopers and City Market stores in Denver, Boulder, Grand Junction and surrounding areas. Beginning today, customers can get a four pack of Greenlites CFLs for just $3.99. The discounted price will last while the special promotion packs are available. The quantity is limited.

Xcel Energy is offering the special low prices on CFLs that have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR label. By replacing one incandescent bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL bulb, customers can reduce their energy bills by up to $30 over the life of each 60-watt equivalent bulb and protect the environment at the same time. Each CFL bulb reduces the Colorado region's carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 180 pounds each year and 1,270 pounds over its lifetime, compared to the use of a 75-watt incandescent bulb (based on Energy Information Administration 1605(b) Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases, assuming operation hours, regional emissions factor and a lifetime of seven years).

“Replacing the most frequently used incandescent light bulbs in your home with ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs is an easy way to save money and help protect the environment because compact fluorescent light bulbs conserve energy,” said Kim Sherman, Xcel Energy product portfolio manager. “If residential customers replace the five most-used incandescent bulbs in their homes with compact fluorescent bulbs, they could save up to $60 a year in electricity costs.”

The most frequently used lights in a home include kitchen lights, living room table and floor lamps, bathroom vanity lights and outdoor porch or post lamps. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than typical incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and must be recycled. Spent bulbs should not be disposed of in household trash receptacles. For more information call the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or visit www.lamprecycle.org for a list of companies offering CFL bulb recycling.
