Xcel Energy is founding reporter of The Climate Registry Greenhouse gas emissions to be measured and publicly reported

MINNEAPOLIS - Xcel Energy has become a founding reporter of The Climate Registry.  The Climate Registry is a non-profit organization established to measure and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in a common, accurate and transparent manner, using consistent industry sectors and borders.  Thirty-nine U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, three Native American tribes, two Mexican states and the District of Columbia are the founders of the organization.

“I believe climate change is a global problem and the time to act on it is now,” said Dick Kelly, Xcel Energy chairman, president and CEO. “The Climate Registry will provide an accurate and credible inventory of our greenhouse gas emissions. It will give our customers and communities a sound technical basis by which they can assess and provide feedback on our climate and clean energy strategies.”

By joining The Climate Registry Xcel Energy continues to demonstrate environmental stewardship on several fronts by voluntarily committing to measure, independently verify, and publicly report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on an annual basis utilizing The Climate Registry General Reporting Protocol.  The protocol is based on the internationally recognized GHG measurement standards of the World Resources Institute and World Business Council on Sustainability.

“Xcel Energy has demonstrated exemplary environmental leadership by courageously stepping forward to support The Climate Registry in its preliminary stages,” said Gina McCarthy, Chair of The Climate Registry. “We are deeply grateful for their integral support in helping to address the challenge of climate change.”

Xcel Energy is the largest utility wind provider in the United States.  The company is a national leader in energy efficiency and conservation programs and development of renewable and other clean energy technologies.  Xcel Energy recently proposed resource plans in its Colorado and Minnesota service territories that will result in significant greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2020.
