Xcel Energy ended controlled outages in the Denver metro area in mid-morning

DENVER - (Updating previous news release) – Xcel Energy ended controlled power outages in Colorado today and has been able to secure additional natural gas supplies. The company has been able to bring back up natural gas-fired generation to meet demand for electricity.

Earlier today, Xcel Energy was forced to go to controlled power outages in Denver and other parts of the state, due to loss of electricity generation from natural gas-fired power plants. The loss of supply was related to equipment failures on systems delivering natural gas to Xcel Energy, due to extremely cold weather conditions.

The controlled outages affecting the Denver metro area were completed at about 10:30 a.m. MST and lasted for about two hours.

Xcel Energy is still asking customers along the Front Range and throughout Colorado to continue to conserve electricity and natural gas throughout the night and into tomorrow.

Xcel Energy is encouraging all of its customers not to place themselves in any potentially hazardous situations by limiting use of electricity or natural gas for life-sustaining equipment. Xcel Energy also is encouraging all customers who have elderly relatives or friends to make arrangements and to check on these people periodically throughout the weekend.
