Keep safety in mind during fall chores, says Xcel Energy
MINNEAPOLIS - Autumn leaves are falling, and homeowners working in their yards raking leaves, cleaning gutters and even planting trees should be aware of potential safety hazards.
Xcel Energy offers these safety tips:
-
Be aware of and stay well away from overhead power lines while cleaning gutters, trimming trees or using a ladder.
-
Keep ladders and tools more than 10 feet away from overhead lines.
-
When trimming trees, make sure branches and limbs are clear of any power lines, and do not trim trees that are touching lines or other electrical equipment. If branches near power lines affect your electricity service, call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999.
-
When planting trees close to power lines, choose small-statured trees or shrubs to minimize the possibility of interference with electricity service.
-
“Call Before You Dig.” If planting or planning any project that involves digging or trenching, call Gopher State One Call at 651-454-0002 (metro Twin Cities area) or 1-800-252-1166 (outside the metro area). Call at least 48 hours in advance (not including weekends and holidays).
-
Never use an electric lawn mower on wet grass, and postpone using electric tools if working surfaces are wet or if it's raining.
