Refrigerator Recycling

Want a brighter, less cluttered storage space? Starting March 1 through October 31, 2013, we’ll pick up your old, working, second fridge or freezer and recycle it, free of charge. You’ll get a little extra space in your garage, a $50 cash rebate, two free compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs¹), and nearly $100 in annual energy savings.

Participation in this program is subject to important rules and eligibility requirements.

To participate in the program, you must:

• Be a residential, electric customer of Xcel Energy living in Minnesota, with a valid account number.
• Have the appliance picked up from the residential address listed on your billing account, and own the spare refrigerator or freezer you are recycling.
• Have the operational, second refrigerator or freezer in your home. Secondary refrigerators must have been in your home for at least six months. Freezers must be a stand-alone unit.No primary units will be recycled. Operational is defined as being capable of cooling/freezing and able to make ice.
• The refrigerator/freezer must be 10–30 cubic feet. Most miniature and commercially-sized refrigerators/freezers do not qualify.
• Plug in your fridge/freezer the night before the pickup date. The unit must demonstrate full operational capability when inspected at the time of pickup.
• Only recycle two refrigerators and/or freezers per program year, per household.
• Enjoy the cool savings. The reward of $50 is mailed to you within four weeks after pickup of the refrigerator. Rebate amounts are subject to change.

If you call outside of the pick-up time frame (November 1 through the end of February), you’ll be placed on a waiting list until the program reopens each March. At that time, you’ll be called for scheduling.
