Insulation Rebates

If your home doesn’t have adequate insulation, you may be losing up to 25% of your heating or cooling energy. Installing or upgrading your home’s insulation is one of the best investments you can make to lower your energy bill. Include air sealing and weather stripping with your project to increase the benefits.

Rebates for insulation are equal to 20% of the total cost of the project, including installation, up to $300 for qualified projects. Homes will be limited to a maximum rebate of $300 in every calendar year.

2012 Installations: Applications for 2012 installations that are postmarked between January 1, 2013 and July 31, 2013 will receive 2013 rebate amounts.

You’ll benefit from adding insulation because:

• Properly insulated homes cost less to operate and they use less energy–that’s good for the environment and your pocketbook.
• Our rebate program lowers the initial cost of the improvement.

You qualify if you’re a Minnesota residential customer living in an existing home or one-to-four unit property, that has insulation professionally installed and whose primary residential heating fuel is supplied by Xcel Energy. Specifically, this means:

• If the primary heating source in your home is a natural gas furnace or boiler, then you must be a Minnesota Xcel Energy residential natural gas customer to participate.
• If the primary heating source in you home is an electric baseboard or an electric boiler, then you must be a Minnesota Xcel Energy residential electric customer to participate.

1. Find a registered contractor.
2. Purchase and install new, qualifying insulation between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
3. Download the rebate application or ask your installing contractor for the paperwork.
4. Complete and mail the application by July 31, 2014 (include your dated invoice). It takes about six weeks to receive a rebate check.

Eligible installations include:

• Attic insulation and bypass sealing where existing insulation is:
  • Must have a pre R-value of 20 or less and
  • Must have a post R-value of 44 or greater
    • If existing is R-21 or greater, must add at least R-25 of additional insulation
• Wall insulation
  • Must have empty wall cavity
  • Must have post R-value of 12 or more
• Air sealing and weather stripping

Installations not eligible for a rebate include the following:

• New construction
• New residential additions
• Garages
• Sheds
• Workshops
• Basements
• Insulating doors
• Mobile homes
• Sound proofing applications
• Properties with more than four units

Account holders requesting rebates must contract for insulation services with fully licensed insulation contractors. Self installs do not qualify for a rebate.

To qualify for a rebate, all insulations must be installed to the manufacturer’s specifications and meet all state and local codes, and federal regulations. Additionally, air sealing and weather stripping must follow industry-accepted practices for mitigating air leakage. Rebate applies to attic and bypass sealing, wall insulation and air-sealing and weather-stripping only.

Participants understand they are not eligible to receive a rebate for this improvement earned under a different Xcel Energy Rebate program such as Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®.
