Emissions Reduction
Our vision for a clean energy future includes reducing emissions associated with the use of fossil fuels at existing power plants. Most notably we have undertaken two massive voluntary emission reduction projects, spread over more than a decade, which transformed six coal-fired power plants and significantly cut emissions. The projects left two major U.S. metropolitan areas with cleaner air and more efficient power plants.
To reduce emissions we have:
- Completed two significant, voluntary emission reduction projects – the first in Colorado with our Denver Metro Emissions Reduction project and the second our Minnesota Emissions Reduction Project.
- Regularly participated with state and federal regulators, the environmental community, the utility industry and others to modify or establish and implement new emission rules and regulations.
- Frequently collaborated with research institutions and technology firms to test new emission control technologies.
- Taken advantage of technology to improve the operating efficiency of our power plants, which can help reduce emissions.
