Transportation
As part of Xcel Energy’s environmental commitment we are using alternate fuels and new technology in our fleet vehicles. We have already greatly reduced our power plant emissions, and the following fleet improvements will continue to reduce our impact on the environment.
Biodiesel Fuel
In the spring of 2007 Xcel Energy started using 20 percent biodiesel fuel (B10) in the entire Colorado diesel vehicle fleet. The fleet includes nearly 550 diesel fuel vehicles, which makes it one of the largest fleets in the state to use biodiesel fuel.
Using biodiesel decreases the fleet's unburned hydrocarbon emissions by 10-15 percent, carbon monoxide emissions by 5-12 percent and particulate matter by 5-9 percent. Xcel Energy is currently using BioEnergy of America, based in Denver, to supply the biofuel.
By adding biodiesel to our Colorado fleet, we are expanding our commitment to the environment. We already have greatly reduced our power plant emissions, and this will help us reduce our mobile emissions.
Hybrid Utility Bucket Truck
Xcel Energy also plans to acquire a hybrid utility bucket truck in 2007. This truck will have improved fuel economy and significantly decreased emissions. In addition, the truck engine can be turned off while operating the bucket at a job site, reducing idling emissions and noise. It also can provide some remote power during emergency restoration services.
Compressed Natural Gas and Hybrid Electric Vehicles
As part of its prior transportation initiatives, the company has 125 compressed natural gas vehicles in its fleet, as well as three hybrid electric vehicles for general use.
The company’s Utility Innovations subsidiary has worked closely with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to understand the potential impact of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). These vehicles access the utility grid to charge their battery packs. Three-to-six PHEVs will be deployed in 2007 to investigate real-world duty cycles and obtain user feedback.
