Wind Power on Our System

Wind Power on Our System

Xcel Energy is the nation's No. 1 wind power provider

Today wind energy is the most affordable renewable resource available to meet our customers’ energy needs. It can help keep energy rates down and protect the environment by saving fuel and reducing air emissions from traditional power plants. Plus for the future, low-cost wind energy purchased under long-term contracts protects customers from rising fuel and environmental compliance costs.

  • Xcel Energy is the No. 1 wind energy provider in the country for  years running, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). You can find the latest on the wind industry and national rankings in the AWEA 2013 Market Industry Report.
  • AWEA named Xcel Energy its “Utility of the Year” for 2013, recognizing our commitment to expanding the use of wind power and progressive wind integration efforts. This is the second time in five years that we have received this award.
  • We plan to expand our wind portfolio by about 40 percent, adding 1,900 megawatts of wind throughout our service territory over the next several years. We currently have 5,080 megawatts of wind power on our systems, enough to meet the energy needs of about 2.5 million average-size homes.
  • We own and operate three wind farms—the Grand Meadow and Nobles wind farms in Minnesota and the Ponnequin wind farm in Colorado. The rest of the wind power on our systems is purchased under long-term contracts.
  • In addition to the wind power in our energy supply, we offer customers the option to choose more wind energy for their homes or businesses through Windsource®. First launched in 1998 to Colorado customers, the program has become one of the largest voluntary green-energy programs in the United States. Customers in Colorado, New Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin can participate in Windsource.
  • We work with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and its high-resolution forecasting system to better predict wind energy and power down fossil fuel plants when the wind is blowing. We estimate improved forecasting has saved customers about $37.5 million so far in fuel costs since the effort began in 2009.
Choose your state

Our products and services differ based on state. Please select your state (or the state you're interested in) from the list to the left.

Why do our products and services differ based on state? Because our business is regulated by state. We have regulated operations in eight Western and Midwestern states. The different regulatory body for each state we serve determines what products and services we deliver in that state.
