Equipment installation internal labor costs  how are they handled?

A customer may purchase lighting equipment from a distributor, and then install it themselves. Here’s how to include these labor charges with project costs.

The only time you may include a labor charge on your invoice is if your company performed the installation, or if you subcontracted the installation and you are collecting the labor amount for the subcontractor.

If the customer installed the lighting equipment themselves, you can’t include the labor amount on your invoice.

  • If you are not directly associated with the installation, and therefore labor is not listed on your invoice, you can submit the application with your invoice and any other invoices the customer has received if the customer wants to proceed that way.
  • If the customer prefers to gather invoices and submit the application on their own, you give the customer your invoice and let them proceed.
  • If the customer has completed the installation internally and would like to include their labor charges as part of the total project cost, we need the customer to email Joe Anderson or an energy efficiency specialist with details of their labor cost. It must come directly to us from the customer and we ask that the customer document their average labor rate and the number of labor hours for the project.

Retrofit wattage range requirements  how do they differ for various fixtures?

Wattage range requirements for several retrofit rebates:

  • Replacing exterior HID fixtures with LED Canopy or Soffit Fixtures - These rebates are for LED fixtures that use 3-6 times less energy than the HID systems they are replacing. To calculate the acceptable range, you should use the LED fixture wattage and the HID lamp wattage. Do not use the HID total fixture wattage in your calculations.

    For instance, if you are using a 50 watt exterior LED canopy fixture to replace a metal halide, you should use the metal halide lamp wattage in your calculations. In this case let’s say it is a 300 watt metal halide lamp. This meets the wattage range requirement, as the LED fixture uses 6 times less energy than the HID, and therefore it falls within the 3-6 times less energy range
  • Energy Star Qualified LED Interior Lamps and Commercial LED Downlight Luminaires - The requirement is that they must use 3-6 times less energy than the lamp or fixture they are replacing. For example, a 20 watt LED fixture can replace an incandescent system in the wattage ranges of 60 watts to 120 watts.
  • Hardwired or Modular CFL fixtures - These fixtures must replace incandescent systems. The wattage requirement range is that the CFL system must use 3-5 times less energy. For example, a 20 watt CFL can replace an incandescent system in the wattage ranges of 60 watts to 100 watts.

Enclosed parking ramps  do they qualify for rebates?

The new construction and lighting retrofit rebate programs require that the rebates are for qualifying interior lighting equipment. The only exceptions are for exterior canopy and soffit fixtures.

A parking ramp meets the requirement for interior lighting equipment if both conditions are met:

  • The parking ramp is enclosed
  • The lighting equipment operates during the day
