Business New Construction EDA - CO

Energy Design Assistance

Colorado businesses get design services, rebates for new construction or renovations

Overview

Colorado businesses can take advantage of Energy Design Assistance (EDA) - a free, comprehensive approach to energy and cost savings for business customers who are considering new construction or renovation projects.

These services offer several unique features designed to meet your individual needs and work with builders, contractors and architects including:

  • Energy consulting services and predictive energy modeling, free to participants.
  • Enhanced services including help toward a green building certification and early analyses in areas such as massing, daylighting, lighting and HVAC.
  • Construction rebates for various whole building energy opportunities from envelope, lighting, controls and cooling to heat recovery and solar water heating.
  • Measurement and verification including construction document review, onsite walk-through and data logging.
  • Design team reimbursement for participating in the EDA program.

The unique tracks offered within Energy Design Assistance include: EDA Basic or EDA Enhanced.

Benefits

Energy Design Assistance supports long-range energy conservation. Key benefits of the program include:

  • Specialized support at key points in the process for your design team to design a building that can save on average 30% on energy over the EDA Baseline (ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Energy Standard) or local code.
  • One-time rebate provided to the owner at the end of construction verification.
  • Green Building Certification support, such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Energy & Atmosphere (EA) credit 1 point calculation for projects registered with the USGBC and participating in EDA Enhanced.
  • Design team compensation provided for participating with our customers. Incentives are based on the time spent gathering efficiency details and cost documentation as well as participating in the EDA meetings.

Who Qualifies

To qualify, you must be:

  • A business electricity and/or natural gas customer of Xcel Energy in Colorado.
  • Constructing a new building, adding to an existing building or renovating an existing space by gutting and replacing equipment.
  • Preapproved (after completion of a qualifying application).

See the Details section for additional requirements.

Details

We offer two ways to help you meet the unique needs of building efficiency into your new construction or renovation project:

EDA Basic

Our core program offering under Business New Construction is ideal for projects with energy savings goals in mind and the ability to take advantage of investigating energy efficient strategies through integrated energy analysis, computer modeling and EDA meetings.

  • Minimum Project Size: 20,000 square feet (new construction, major renovations or additions)
  • Timing: Schematic or Early Design Development
  • Energy Savings Requirement: Minimum of 15% electric energy demand savings and 15% natural gas energy demand savings compared to either ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Energy Standard or the local energy code1
  • Rebates: $400 per kW and $0.04 per kWh. $4 per Dth is also offered for Xcel Energy natural gas customers.
  • Basic Services: Energy modeling results for efficiency strategies as selected by owner and design team, review of construction documents for inclusion of strategies, site verification and monitoring of select installed strategies.

EDA Enhanced

EDA Enhanced is ideal for design teams and owners interested in early goal setting and evaluating energy efficiency options beginning in the pre-design and concept design stages. Refinement of these early options will follow with optimization as the design progresses.

Our program history demonstrates that decisions made in the early stages of design have significant potential for energy conservation.

  • Minimum Project Size: 20,000 square feet (new construction, major renovations or additions).
  • Timing: Pre-design or Early Schematic Design
  • Energy Savings Requirement: Minimum of 30% electric energy demand savings and 15% natural gas energy demand savings compared to either ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Energy Standard or the local energy code.
  • Rebates: $400 per kW and $0.04 per kWh. $4 per Dth is also offered for Xcel Energy gas customers.
  • Enhanced Services: The Enhanced track is for projects with energy savings goals 30% or more compared to the baseline and achieving a 3rd party verified green building certification, such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®). Other early analysis efforts completed in early design can also be supported under the enhanced track.

Is your project less than 20,000 square feet? The Energy Efficiency Buildings program may be right for you.

1 If the local government energy code is at least 10% more stringent than the EDA baseline (ASHRAE 90.1-2007), participants can qualify for the EDA program if their energy efficiency savings exceeds the local code by 5% for the Basic track, 10% for the Enhanced track. Photovoltaic systems may be used to meet the local code, but amounts spent towards a photovoltaic system will not be eligible for rebates under this program.

Choose your state

Our products and services differ based on state. Please select your state (or the state you're interested in) from the list to the left.

Why do our products and services differ based on state? Because our business is regulated by state. We have regulated operations in eight Western and Midwestern states. The different regulatory body for each state we serve determines what products and services we deliver in that state.
