Recent events

• Southwestern Public Service Company (“SPS”) filed an Application with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission on May 15, 2008, for a certificate of public convenience and necessity to build a 230 kV transmission line and associated substation facilities and modification to two existing 115 kV transmission lines in Eddy County, New Mexico.  The Commission has assigned Case No. 08-00161-UT to this Application. • Northern States Power (NSP) is in the application preparation process for a new project in South Minneapolis. We are currently in the information gathering stage and holding community meetings. An application will be filed with the Minnesota PUC in early 2009. More information

Xcel Energy is a partner in CapX 2020, a joint initiative of 11 transmission-owning utilities in Minnesota and the surrounding region to expand the electric transmission grid to ensure continued reliable service. The new transmission lines will be built in phases designed to meet electric growth, as well as to support renewable energy expansion. The State of Minnesota has adopted a biennial transmission planning process to ensure the integrity of the state’s electric transmission system. A complex network of transmission lines transmit electric energy from electric power generating plants to local distribution substations and to other utilities in the region.

Transmission-owning utilities in Minnesota file a biennial transmission planning report with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in the fall of odd years. These utilities have joined to sponsor the Minnesota Electric Transmission Planning and public meetings concerning transmission issues so that the public can become more directly involved in planning.
