Denver Gas Pipe Replacement
Background on Denver Gas Pipe Replacement Project
Over the next three to five years, Xcel Energy is replacing nearly 100 linear miles of natural gas pipeline in the Denver metro area that will result in continued reliable gas service for current and new customers. These 100 miles are only a portion of the 600 miles of gas pipe we are replacing throughout Colorado.
A week prior to each project, residents and businesses will receive a flyer describing the work, a letter from the project manager performing the work that will include a 24/7 phone number specific to that project, and an automated phone call a few days before work starts.
What to Expect
In areas where the gas pipeline is being replaced, this is what residents can expect to see and the steps involved with replacing the pipe:
- Utility owners, like Xcel Energy, locate underground utilities before they start digging to avoid damage. You will see gas line locations marked with yellow “Buried Gas Line” flags and yellow spray paint on streets and sidewalks. You’ll also see other colored flags and/or paint, which represents the location of other utilities: red for electric, blue for water, orange for communication, and green for sewer.
- Trenches and/or holes will be made in the streets and sidewalks so new polyethylene (PE) or steel pipe can be placed next to the old pipe. These trenches and holes will be plated or covered over every night, and all construction equipment will be stored behind barricades every night.
- To be in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) Gas Standards, gas meters and shut off valves located inside homes will be relocated outside at no cost to our customers. If your gas meter needs to be moved, an Xcel Energy employee or contractor will contact you to set up an appointment. All Xcel Energy employees and contractors carry company ID cards, and we encourage you to ask them for identification before granting permission to enter your home.
- It may be necessary to replace the gas service line running from some homes to the gas pipeline. During work on side streets, there will be “No Parking” during assigned work hours.
- After the new pipe is installed, the system will be tested according to required DOT Gas Standards. After testing and pressurization, gas service will be transferred from the old pipe to the new pipe.
- Once the new pipeline is in service, roads and sidewalk will be restored to their original condition.
