Hennepin Island Hydro Generating Station

Hennepin Island Hydro Generating Station

This plant is also known as St. Anthony Falls Hydro

Location: West side of Hennepin Island, Minneapolis

Generating Capacity: 12 megawatts

Type of Operation: Hydroelectric

Plant History

Current plant was built in 1882 on the site of early sawmills. The five generating units produce around 2.4 megawatts each. A 1,900-foot-long, 14-foot-high dam, situated on the upper portion of St. Anthony Falls, creates a 450-acre reservoir that provides fuel for the plant.

Interesting Features

The St. Anthony Falls dam was replaced in 2000-2001 with a new dam around 30 feet upriver of the existing structure. The upper island was developed into a park with an access bridge giving public view of main spillway, horseshoe dam and downtown skyline.

Environmental Highlights

Hydro is a clean, renewable fuel, and Xcel Energy manages its dam operations to protect the aquatic environment and improve recreational opportunities.
