Location: Aurora, Colo.

Plant Description: Blue Spruce is a natural gas-fired, combined cycle generation plant. It has two operating units. The plant provides Colorado with environmentally responsible energy to help meet the need for electricity, while also providing needed diversification for the state's fuel mix.

Power Production Capability: 278 megawatts (MW): unit 1 – 139 MW and unit 2 – 139 MW.

Fuel Source: Natural gas and diesel fuel.

Plant History

Blue Spruce is a relatively new plant. It went into service in April 2003  when it was owned by Calpine Corporation. Xcel Energy purchased the plant in 2010.

Interesting Features

The plant uses General Electric 7FA turbines and can use two fuel sources.

Environmental Highlights

Blue Spruce delivers efficient, low-impact, environmentally-friendly power for peak demand. The plant’s turbine design and advanced emissions control technology reduces nitrogen oxide emissions when compared to older plants.
