Power restored to most downtown Sioux Falls customers

January 26, 2013

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –  After working through the night to repair the heavily damaged underground electricity system in downtown Sioux Falls, Xcel Energy crews by early this afternoon had restored service to most of the customers who lost power early Friday morning.

Service was restored at 12:19 p.m. today to 95 percent of the approximately 200 customers whose power was out overnight. Fewer than a dozen customers, all of them businesses, remained without power Saturday afternoon.

Crews from Sioux Falls and the Twin Cities will continue stringing and connecting underground cable and repairing other electrical components this afternoon and tonight until all power is restored. Full restoration currently is expected to occur by 7 a.m. Sunday.

Manhole covers were blown off and a sidewalk buckled when the outage started at about 4:30  a.m. Friday.  The cause of the outage remains under investigation.

More than 500 customers – mostly businesses – initially were affected; crews restored power to about 300 customers in about an hour.

Customers who have questions may call Xcel Energy at (800) 895-1999.
