Our products and services differ based on state. Please select your state (or the state you're interested in) from the list to the left.
Why do our products and services differ based on state? Because our business is regulated by state. We have regulated operations in eight Western and Midwestern states. The different regulatory body for each state we serve determines what products and services we deliver in that state.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Xcel Energy officials strongly recommend that natural gas customers keep their gas meters free of ice and snow to prevent the potential of dangerous natural gas pressure buildup in their homes.
With the recent snowfall and temperatures expected to warm up this week, melting ice and snow on roofs and in trees can melt and drip on meters, then refreeze, increasing the potential of equipment malfunction leading to dangerous natural gas pressure buildup in the home.
“The natural gas meter’s regulator vent is especially vulnerable to plugging any time we have a combination of snow and ice buildup and fluctuating temperatures,” said Scott Snyder, director of field operations for Xcel Energy in Wisconsin.
He recommends maintaining a clean meter and a path to and from the device. “Carefully shovel around the meter and clear the meter itself by hand. Avoid using a snowblower near the meter,” he said.
If homeowners notice ice collecting on their meter, especially around the regulator and vent, or are concerned that their meter's regulator vent may be blocked, please call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-2999.
Xcel Energy reminds natural gas customers that if they smell natural gas in their homes to leave the house immediately.
