Fifty-six programs will help Xcel Energy customers save money by saving energy

2012-06-04 00:00:00.0

MINNEAPOLIS – Xcel Energy today filed its proposed 2013-2015 Conservation Improvement Program, which includes 56 energy-saving electricity and natural gas programs for residential and business customers.

“This proposal continues our legacy of giving customers numerous ways to save money by saving energy,” said Judy Poferl, president and CEO of Northern States Power Co.-Minnesota, an Xcel Energy company.

“In 2011, we received the Champion of Energy Efficiency in Industry award from the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and in 2012 we were recognized with the Sustained Excellence Award for leadership across ENERGY STAR programs.  This proposal will continue the momentum sparked by our 2010-2012 program, which greatly increased our customers’ electricity savings and surpassed the state’s electricity savings goal for the first time.”

The new proposal will guide Xcel Energy’s conservation efforts for the next three years. The utility proposes to spend approximately $260 million from 2013 through 2015 to meet the state's objective for 1.5 percent savings of retail energy use. Total savings from the plan represent enough energy to power 155,000 homes for one year.

“We have a multitude of energy savings choices for just about every customer we serve.  We can help homeowners save energy and money from their attics to their kitchens to their basements,” said Poferl. “We are a partner to help businesses small and large improve their bottom line and thrive.”

The filing includes a phase-out of the Solar*Rewards incentive after 2013.

“We are proud of our solar accomplishment in both the diversity of installations and the knowledge we have gained, but it’s time to refocus our CIP plan on energy efficiency,” Poferl said.

Pending approval by the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Division of Energy Resources, Xcel Energy will begin implementing/expanding programs in 2013. The filing is available at eDockets - Search   Docket number - E,G002/CIP-12-447

“We welcome input from our stakeholders on this proposal and look forward to working with the Commerce Department on implementation,” Poferl said.

Xcel Energy is a national leader in energy conservation and has offered efficiency programs to both residential and business customers for over 20 years. Since 1992, enough electricity has been saved through the company’s efficiency programs to avoid the need to build nearly 10 medium sized power plants in Minnesota.
