Choose your state

Our products and services differ based on state. Please select your state (or the state you're interested in) from the list to the left.

Why do our products and services differ based on state? Because our business is regulated by state. We have regulated operations in eight Western and Midwestern states. The different regulatory body for each state we serve determines what products and services we deliver in that state.

Employment Testing

Employment Testing

Some positions require prior testing

Employment Testing

Pre-employment testing helps Xcel Energy identify and assess the abilities and skills needed for certain jobs. Like many businesses, Xcel Energy seeks employees who can learn quickly and contribute to the company’s success.

Our pre-employment tests are job related, fair and objective. The paper-and-pencil tests help predict a candidate’s likelihood of success on the job and provide a clear measure of mechanical aptitude, math skills and other competencies. We partner with the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for the majority of our employment tests.

Test Preparation

Preparing is a big part of the testing process. You’ll find some tips, hints and sample test questions using the EEI links below. The tips and practice tests may help improve your chances of qualifying.

If prompted, type in "Xcel" as the username and "Energy" as the password.

Xcel Energy’s Testing Process

Xcel Energy requires that candidates for some positions pass the EEI Test as part of the minimum requirements. We may provide an opportunity to take the test. First priority will be given to those who have applied for a position and demonstrate they have met the minimum requirements for the position. We reserve the right to limit the number of candidates who are tested on a given date. If a position requires EEI testing, it will be clearly noted in the minimum requirements section of the posting.

Entry-level positions provide hands-on experience and training that will enable you to move into apprenticeship programs. These programs will prepare you for journeyman positions in Xcel Energy facilities throughout the United States.

If you would like to apply for a position that requires the EEI test, use the link below to start your job search. Look first for the location that interests you. Then submit your online application to the position of interest.

Once we receive your online application and validate that you meet the minimum requirements, we will send you instructions on how to register for a test in your geographic area.

Note: Once you are successful with the EEI test, you are not required to take the test again. Please apply for any positions that require EEI testing and you meet the minimum requirements. If you have previously taken and passed the EEI test, please note this in your application so we can ensure you are not asked to retake the test. If you are unsuccessful, you must wait 6 months before retaking the EEI test. Practice tests and training materials are available at the links on the top of this page.
